Free Anas Abu Srour, Palestinian Political Prisoner

January 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Anas Abu Srour, the director of the Aida Youth Center, a community organization in the Aida refugee camp, was abducted by the Israeli army and sentenced to 6 months in “administrative detention.” Anas, 35, has a wife and three month old baby. NH Peace Action has been a supporter of Anas and the Youth Center for a number of years.

The Aida Youth Center is a community organization in the Aida Refugee Camp in the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem. The Center serves 300 children and youth, providing after school art, music, sports, and academic programs, as well as humanitarian relief to the wider community. The mission of the Aida Youth Center is to create a safe space for youth to be empowered and grow into their full potential in spite of the restrictive environment they grow up in, steering them away from despair and violence.

Administrative detention is a form of arbitrary detention without charge or trial that can be renewed indefinitely and has been used extensively against Palestinians, some as young as 12 years old. According to Amnesty International, since October 7 “Israeli authorities have dramatically increased their use of administrative detention of Palestinians across the occupied West Bank; extended emergency measures that facilitate inhuman and degrading treatment of prisoners; and failed to investigate incidents of torture and death in custody.”

Tonight, Rasha Mahmoud, Janet Simmon and Sandra Yarne will tell us more about Anas Abu Srour and the Aida Youth Center, Palestinian political prisoners and how people in the U.S., especially New Hampshire, might be able to intervene to free Anas.
