Bird-dogging refers to the tactic of closely monitoring, following, or persistently questioning a person—usually a politician—to hold them accountable or force a response on specific issues. It is also used in real estate to describe scouting for potential property deals. It serves as an often high-pressure, persistent form of civic advocacy.
Here in New Hampshire, we have a unique opportunity and unprecedented access to candidates during election season to get them on record about issues that are important to you—and to influence their opinions.
How to bird-dog effectively:
- Prepare: Research candidates’ positions and voting records.
- Craft strong questions: Connect personally to the issue, educate the audience and media, and ask for specific commitments.
- Ask simply and boldly: Make your question clear and to the point. Ask early in the event.
- Practice: To build confidence with writing and asking questions
- Document and Amplify: Have a teammate record and share videos and photos.
