Spirituality of Peacemaking: Compassionate Listening in Alabama
March 6, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Free
Compassionate Listening is the practice of listening with the heart to the stories of others with an open heart, and without judgment or ego in order to understand different perspectives and experiences.
Join Rev. David Grishaw-Jones, Dr. Joel Berman, and award winning author and photographer Becky Field for a discussion on their recent trip to Alabama, where they heard the stories and dreams of advocates, activists, civil rights veterans, community organizers, Southern progressives and die-hard conservatives who lived through the civil rights struggles of the 1960s.
Joel Berman is a long-time resident of Concord NH who’s made multiple trips to Israel-Palestine and Alabama with The Compassionate Listening Project, an organization that seeks to recognize the common humanity and shared values of people across geo-political divides.
Since 2012, photographer Becky Field has documented the lives of immigrants and refugees in New Hampshire to show that while we have different cultural roots, we have common dreams. She has published two award-winning books of her photographs and immigrants’ stories, and in 2017 she partnered with the NH Charitable Foundation to start a college scholarship for refugees. Becky provides talks and exhibits about cultural diversity in the Granite State. She has a Certificate in Photography from the NH Institute of Art, and studied at photography centers throughout the Northeast. In past work Becky was a university professor and wildlife ecologist, and holds a doctoral degree in wildlife ecology. Last year, Becky traveled to Alabama with the Compassionate Listening Project to learn more about racial issues in our society. She lives in Concord, NH.
