Peace & Justice Conversations: James Lawson’s Legacy of Nonviolence

November 4, 2024 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Dr. James McCarty joins us to discuss the important history and legacy of nonviolence that was left to us by James Lawson.

Rev. James Lawson Jr. (1928-2024) was one of the civil rights movement’s most prominent leaders, and a lifelong proponent of nonviolent activism. Referred to by Martin Luther King Jr. as “the leading strategist of nonviolence in the world,” Lawson was known internationally for teaching nonviolent resistance tactics to thousands of activists. Dr. McCarty will discuss the relevance of Rev. Lawson’s life and teaching in light of the many challenges our world is facing such as climate change, the global rise of ethno-nationalism, economic inequality, and the continuing practice of war and genocide.

James W. McCarty is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Religion and Conflict Transformation and Director of the Tom Porter Religion and Conflict Transformation Program at Boston University. He is an interdisciplinary scholar whose research sits at the intersections of Peace Studies and Christian Ethics. In particular, he is interested in the ways that social forces shape our moral lives and the ways that moral agency is exercised toward social transformation. He researches these dynamics in social and political practices such as peacebuilding, truth and reconciliation commissions, nonviolent social change, and racial justice and human rights activism.

About NHPA’s bi-weekly Zoom Peace & Justice Conversation Series: 2020’s upheavals brought us to a new moment of reckoning and possibility. How do we want to live in the world? What do we value? How can we make the changes we’ve been yearning for? NH Peace Action has been engaged in working for change for decades. We’d like to bring you into these conversations about issues and options for the future.  There is no charge to attend, but your contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated.
