Peace and Justice Conversations: International Law for Activists

March 10 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

Legal accountability is an indispensable element of peacebuilding. The International Criminal Court (ICC) was hailed by late UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as a “hope for all humanity” while the International Court of Justice (ICJ) provides the primary judicial mechanism for pacific resolution of disputes among states, as envisioned by the UN Charter. And yet, these institutions themselves are under attack, imperiling the hopes for victims of the gravest crimes worldwide. Rebecca will discuss how these courts contribute to peace, why they are needed now more than ever, and what can be done regarding current grave challenges to their work.

Over the past year and a half questions of International Law and institutions have been particularly important to NH Peace Action’s work. Rebecca will help us better understand International Law as relates to current peace and justice concerns so we can be effective advocates and sources of information for others.

Rebecca A. Shoot is an international lawyer and democracy and governance practitioner with decades of experience in the non-governmental, inter-governmental, and private sectors supporting human rights, democratic processes, and the rule of law on five continents. She is currently Executive Director at Citizens for Global Solutions and brings experience from previous roles at Washington Working Group for the International Criminal Court (WICC), American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative and Parliamentarians for Global Action.

Rebecca is admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and is a member of several bar associations, including the American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA), where she serves as Advocacy Director for the International Criminal Court (ICC) Committee. She served as a Visiting Professional in the Presidency of the ICC and has provided pro bono legal expertise to The Carter Center, International Refugee Assistance Project, United Nations Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances, and U.S. Marine Corps University, where she helped develop the international humanitarian law curriculum.

About NHPA’s bi-weekly Zoom Peace & Justice Conversation Series: 2020’s upheavals brought us to a new moment of reckoning and possibility. How do we want to live in the world? What do we value? How can we make the changes we’ve been yearning for? NH Peace Action has been engaged in working for change for decades. We’d like to bring you into these conversations about issues and options for the future.  There is no charge to attend, but your contributions in any amount are greatly appreciated.
