The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the first legally binding international agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons with the ultimate goal being their total elimination. To date, 92 countries have signed the treaty and 68 have ratified it, but the US government and the Biden administration actively oppose the treaty.
The 2nd Meeting of States Parties (2MSP) to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) will be held in NY from November 27 to December 1, 2023. If we can successfully press our federal administration to send an observer delegation, it would be a huge step forward in U.S. leadership on nuclear disarmament, and send a strong signal to other nuclear-armed states.
On Oct 18 we will contact our local/state elected officials and ask that they sign a letter to President Biden urging him to (1) send an observer delegation to the 2MSP and (2) to initiate negotiations with all nuclear weapons states toward a verifiable, timebound agreement to eliminate all nuclear weapons from the planet.
