The Golden Rule’s visit to Portsmouth June 22-24 is part of the Great Loop Tour throughout the eastern U.S., and is a project of Veterans For Peace. Veterans For Peace is sailing the historic 39 foot ketch in opposition to nuclear weapons and war. The tour is supporting the UN Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons and urging the United States to abide by this international treaty making nuclear weapons illegal. While in Portsmouth, it will dock at Prescott Park marina, where the crew will receive visitors.
Veterans For Peace has recovered and restored the original peace boat, the Golden Rule, that set sail in 1958 to stop nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands, and which inspired the many peacemakers and peace ships that followed. The reborn Golden Rule is sailing once more, to show that nuclear abolition is possible, and that bravery and tenacity can overcome militarism. The Golden Rule is sailing the “Great Loop” – down the Mississippi River around the Gulf of Mexico, up the East Coast and into the Great Lakes.
