2025 Winter Book Study: “Nonviolence: Twenty-Five Lessons from the History of a Dangerous Idea”

January 15 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join us to discuss this inspiring and important book: “Nonviolence: Twenty-Five Lessons from the History of a Dangerous Idea” by Mark Kurlansky. We’ll meet on Zoom for four sessions, Wednesdays January 15 & 29, February 12 & 26, 7-8:30pm.

About the book: In this timely, original and controversial narrative, nonviolence is discussed, not as a mere state of mind but as a distinct technique for overcoming social injustice and ending wars. This sweeping but concise book moves from ancient China to the American war in Iraq showing that violence has never been very successful, while nonviolence has a remarkable record.   Daniel Ellsberg called it, “a brilliantly reasoned and urgent new book. These are powerful lessons that couldn’t be more timely. The world needs this book.” The Dalai Lama wrote “It is my hope and prayer that this book should not only attract attention, but have a profound effect on those who read it.”

Facilitated by NH Peace Action members, Sandra Yarne, Amy Antonucci, David Blair & Bill Maddocks. The facilitators will help to create space for a safe and deep discussion of the issues raised in the book and will make sure everyone gets a chance to share. Our conversations will be shaped by all who attend. The goal of our book study is to expand our knowledge and understanding of topics related to peace and to have a space where members can connect with each other, learn and build community.

There is a minimal $10 charge to join this group, which will be limited in size to 12 participants. As with all NH Peace Action Events, if cost is a barrier, please email doreen@nhpeaceaction.org. Once you have purchased your ticket, you will receive the Zoom registration link. If you do not receive the Zoom link in a email. Please email Doreen.

We suggest you purchase the book at your local independent book store or at an online used book dealer such as thriftbooks. As this is a 2006 publication, there are many used copies available.
